Player of the Week honor goes to Vandersloot (again)
January 26th, 2011 at 3:13 pm by Erick WalkerGonzaga University women’s basketball senior Courtney Vandersloot, a 2007 Kentwood High graduate, was named West Coast Conference Player of the Week for the second-straight week and for the 11th time in her career, as announced by the conference office Monday. Vandersloot shares the weekly award with ReZina TecleMariam of the University of Portland.
Vandersloot helped Gonzaga staff perfect in West Coast Conference play by averaging 18.0 points, 9.0 assists, 3.5 steals and 2.5 rebounds over the Zags’ two victories, while shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 90.0 percent at the charity stripe.
Kent Shootout this Friday

KENT – The Kentridge and Kentwood boys basketball teams, both ranked in the top 10 of the Class 4A, will battle in the highlight game of the Les Schwab Shootout in Kent, set for Friday, Jan. 28, 2011 at the ShoWare Center.
No. 4 Kentridge beat No. 7 Kentwood in a close game the first time they two teams played earlier this season. The game between the two top-10 teams is set for 8:30 p.m. at the ShoWare Center, the fifth game of the third annual Les Schwab Shootout in Kent.
The event features all four Kent high school boys and girls basketball teams playing each other. The other games feature the Kent-Meridian boys and girls, the Kentlake boys and girls and the Kentridge and Kentwood girls.
A game between the top-ranked Class 1A team in the state, Cascade Christian against Emerald Ridge will kick off the action at 2 p.m. at the ShoWare Center.
Tickets are $8 at the door for adults and $5 for seniors and students with ASB.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Shakeup in North leads to three-way tie

On Thursday, Kent-Meridian was awarded another win while Kentridge had one taken away, thus leaving Auburn, KR and K-M in a three-way tie for first place with identical 6-2 records.
“Kentridge still holds the tie-breaker because they beat both of us,” said Kent-Meridian coach Brian Lockhart.
Kent-Meridian will pick up its additional win against Mount Rainier. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) ruled on Thursday that the Rams had used an ineligible player in an 81-70 win over the Royals on Dec. 3.
Kentridge’s situation is a bit different.
Kentridge used a player in an 81-50 season-opening victory over Jefferson that had been ejected in the school’s final football game of the season. According to WIAA rules, if an athlete is ejected from the final game of a season, he/she must sit out the first game of the next athletic season that he/she participates in.
“We misinterpreted the rule,” Jamison explained in a mid-December interview. “We thought the player had to sit out one game the following football season.”
All said, we now have a three-way tie for first, Kentwood knocking on the door, and a jumbled mess down below.
Should be a fun finish.
BASKETBALL: Comcast Showcase coming to ShoWare
January 10th, 2011 at 4:35 pm by Erick WalkerSome of the Pacific Northwest’s top high school girls and boys basketball teams will take part in the inaugural Comcast Showcase, a day-long celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. A total of seven games will take place the ShoWare Center in Kent.
The event begins with a battle of ranked girls teams as Kentwood goes against Lakes at 10 a.m. the event wraps up at 7:30 p.m. with a game between No. 7 Class 4A Auburn against Class 3A Enumclaw. And inbetween, there will be more games and a special tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. at 4 p.m.
A pair of Portland teams will make the trip north as the Grant High School boys take on Auburn Riverside and the Oregon City girls will travel to take on the highly ranked Auburn Riverside girls. Another interesting game features defending Class 4A champion Kentwood against defending Class 3A champion Union, which now plays at the Class 4A level. Both are ranked in the top 10 this season.
Tickets are $10 at the door for adults and $5 for seniors and students with ASB.

National Infield Camp Director, Dave Smart will take campers through their paces during this four week camp session. Camp will be limited to the first 15 campers to ensure that the kids get enough repetitions to make an immediate impact in their development. Coach Smart will be assisted by former Division 1 infielder and CSU alum Ryan Smart. Each session will be comprised of a theme each week.

Week #1: Fundamentals- Topics to be covered: Glove presentation skills, brace step, fielding position, hands out, left eye catches, deflecting, hunting the short hop.
Week #2: Athletic Plays- Topics to be covered: Review week # 1, Extensions and backhands, throwing across your body.
Week #3: Routine Double Plays- Topics to be covered: SS and 2nd base Pie 1 feeds and pivots, SS and 2B take it yourself
Week #4: Specialty Double Plays- Topics to be covered: Review week #3, Pie 2 and Pie 2.5 double play feeds and pivots.

Interestingly, the SPSL South led the title count, bringing home 8 overall compared to 4 for the North, three of which came from Auburn. I say “interestingly” because it has been quite a while since the South appeared stronger than the North on the mat. The final two titles went to Enumclaw, which is in the SPSL 3A. Enumclaw also won the team title with 198.5 points followed by Auburn (187.5) — seems like old times — and Graham-Kapowsin (184).
FOOTBALL: Turner, Midshipmen fall in Poinsettia Bowl
December 28th, 2010 at 4:47 pm by Erick WalkerBrandon Turner, a 2008 Kentridge High graduate, has found success on the football field at the college level. Now playing at the Navy Academy, Turner and the Midshipmen fell to San Diego State 35-14 in the Poinsettia Bowl Dec. 23 in San Diego. Turner, a 6-foot-4, 208-pound wide receiver, didn’t pull in a catch during the game.But he did finish the season with four receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown. During his senior season at Kentridge, Turner was a quarterback and finished with 1,541 total yards (754 on the ground, 787 through the air) and 19 touchdowns.
